Wild Earth was brought in on this project in collaboration with Architect Lars Langberg and clients during the restoration of a 1908 cottage. The property was purchased as a second home getaway for our clients and their grown children to enjoy together through life’s seasons. The dream was to create a magical space in beautiful west Sonoma County with a strong sense of place and connection to the wider landscape of Sebastopol. Neighboring apple orchards, six towering California Redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) anchoring the property, and a sizable vineyard on site set the tone for this wine country getaway. Photo at left shows the project area “before” landscape installation.

600 sq ft of outdoor living space was added in a Buckskin flagstone patio off the covered porch of the cottage. Surrounding the patio is a dry stack retaining wall and curved fireplace hearth. Subterranean drainage connects beneath the patio and behind the retaining wall to the front meadow. Three hand-selected upright manzanitas were placed in the planting beds above the retaining wall to mature gracefully into multi-stem specimens viewed from below. The understory is filled with sun loving California native salvias, poppies, and yarrows to delight pollinators through a long, colorful bloom period. In shadier areas closer to the Redwoods we installed sedges, heucheras,  and woodland strawberries en masse to continue the wildlife habitat.

First, we addressed drainage concerns as the property sloped toward the cottage. French drains bring stormwater from upslope  down around the side of the cottage and into a retention basin dug out in the front meadow area designed as a wildflower meadow and ephemeral vernal pool. Along the way, water is gathered from behind the WEA designed and installed stone hearth and back patio as well as capturing graywater from the outdoor shower. Pictured at right are three PVC drainage pipes that feed from the patio to the front meadow to direct water safely away from the cottage.

Along the entry driveway our clients already had a few beautiful citrus trees planted and wanted to further add to the edible plantings. We went for a sunny citrus hedge row using bush varieties so the vineyard view was not blocked from the cottage’s kitchen window. For all you Sonoma County backyard orchard enthusiasts, we selected Mandarins ‘Pixie and ‘Tango’’, Improved Meyer Lemon, and ‘Bearss Seedless’ Lime for their kitchen uses and low chill hours. A riot of colorful pollinator-friendly perennials are planted along the urbanite pathway leading from the back patio to the front meadow. The urbanite pathway is made of concrete removed during the demolition phase. We love the chance to reuse discarded material and save it from the landfill! We broke up the concrete into flagstone chunks, stained it to match the existing red brick chimney, and dry set it directly into the soil for a highly permeable, low cost pathway.

CA Native wildflower and grass seeds were sown to attract beneficial insects and birds, out-compete weeds, soak up stormwater, and build a seed bank. Plus, the meadow is viewable from the sun patio turned home office, complete with binoculars and bud vases full of fresh picked blooms. Tidy tips, Lupines, Baby Blue Eyes, Goldfields, Yarrow, Blue Eyed Grass, CA Poppies, Fescues, and Oatgrass create a tapestry of texture and life.

The hedgerow is visible from the bedrooms inside the cottage and features layers of evergreen and deciduous shrubs and small trees. Existing birch trees were retained, but underplanted with more drought tolerant plants like native Coffeeberry and Coast Silk Tassel. The outdoor bathroom is adorned with Passiflora vines that bring hundreds of butterflies to the property.

Low voltage landscape lighting gently illuminates key plants like the back patio Manzanita and Citrus hedge row. Dark sky-approved pathlights guide one along the connecting pathways. The patio stone steps and drystack stone wall feature deck lights for a gentle glow. And from the magnificent Redwoods we strung a cluster of rattan pendant lights for a touch of magic.

We look forward to returning to this property in future construction phases to continue our collaboration of stewardship.
